1959 Deluxe Schwinn Hornet

Estabished in 1959, the bike shop was started by Ted Cleys, and was located just West of Central Rd on Northwest Hwy.  In 1963, Ted moved the store to its present location.  In 1967, it changed hands, and was purchased by a bike racer named Ed Turney, who had worked for  George Garner both in California and in Northbrook, IL.  In 1971, the bike shop was added on to and was doubled in size.  In 1979, Ed put the store up for sale, and my wife and I bought it.  We are in our 34th year.  We have always sold Schwinn branded bikes.  We have carried many brands over the years.  Currently we carry Cannondale, Schwinn, GT, Raleigh, origin-8 and Sun bicycles. We also sell cycling helmets, clothing, accesories and books. Need a repair or tune-up we have professional mechanics on staff!

Prospect Bikes is an authorized GARMIN Dealer.

Garmin was the first to bring GPS to the cycling computer market — the first to let cyclists put their ride on the map and record detailed metrics with the accuracy only GPS can deliver. The Garmin product line has continued to evolve to bring you the features you crave and the quality you and your bike deserve.

Garmin Edge 510 & 1000 are used by the Cannondale-Garmin Pro Cycling Team.

Prospect Bikes offers thorough, professional service for all kinds of bikes.

We repair vintage to modern bikes

Prospect Bikes has been serving the needs of cyclists since 1959. Whether you're looking to service your vintage Schwinn, your Cannondale road bike, your daily commuter, BMX, cyclo-cross, single speed, or your mountain bike, the Prospect Bike's team is happy to service them.

All bikes should be routinely checked over to be ridden safely. Brakes are obvious - you have to stop. Other parts of the bike should be looked at too. Pedals can slip when chains are worn or when derailleurs and shifters are out of adjustment. Bearings should be adjusted so they won't damage your bearing surfaces. Regular Tune Ups address these issues.

Bicycle Tune Up - $80

We adjust your brakes, derailleurs, and perform minor truing of your wheels. (There are additional costs for wheels with hops, flat spots, or broken spokes.) All your bolts are checked for tightness and the drive train is lubricated. We wipe the frame down and clean the wheel rims - no rust removal

Coaster Brake Bike Tune Up - $55

Single Speed Bikes with handbrakes are $65 - $75

Safety Inspection - $25

This is a great option if you just want to find out what your bike needs. We put your bike up on the repair stand and look it over closely. We give you an itemized list of what the bike needs. If you commit to get all the recommended repairs done within 30 days, the $25 is applied towards the total repair costs if ALL recommended repairs are done.

We have numerous other services such as flat tire repair and wheel straightening, basic adjustments of single or multiple items, both functional and fitting you best to your bike.

The only 4 things we do not do are: welding, painting, fixing something that just can't be fixed, and fixing something that isn't broken - (unless you tip us real good! - LOL).

We are dedicated to keeping you rolling. We have everything you need, whether you are commuting to work, riding the local trails, cruising around town, or setting out for that century or cross-country tour.

Bike Routes

Bike Routes

Here are some safe bike routes that we recommend. Happy cycling!

We often ride these bike routes. Want to ride with us, ask at the shop

Victory Lap - 20 Miles of Easy Riding

(Garmin GPX files and Cue Sheets coming soon for all rides)

This route starts/ends at the Prospect Bike Shop. Includes road and paved bike trails passing through Lake Arlington.

The Harper Loop - 35 miles of rolling hills out in the country.

This ride starts/ends at Harper College. On this ride you will find some elevation gains and ride past some farmland and horse stables.

Arlington Heights - Mount Prospect connection.

A quiet route between Arlington Heights and Mount Prospect. Great route to visit us at the bike shop and avoid North West Highway. Good for commuters.

Mt. Prospect - Des Plaines connection - 4 miles.

This route requires the rider to use parts of Mt. Prospect Road and Wolf Road.

Woodland Trails Park to Lake Arlington via Prospect Heights Bike Path.

A nice 9 mile route with water and restroom stops.

Ride to Harvard - 70 miles and you can take the Metra back!

This is a good Sunday morning route as the traffic will be low on some of the busier roads. Check with us at the shop and ride with us.

Bike Wisdom

Bike Wisdom

Here is some Bike Wisdom we hope you enjoy!

Enjoy yourself - you are an athlete and an adventurer!

Before you ride - do the A - B - C - Quick - Check

  • A is for AIR = Tire air pressure - inflate to air pressure on the side of the tire.  Use a tire pressure gauge.  Replace tires if damaged.
  • B is for BRAKE = Inspect pads for wear, replace if there is less than 1/4" left.  Squeeze the brake levers - make sure there is at least an inch of space between the brake lever and the handle bar.
  • C is for Cranks and Chain = Pull your crank arms away from bike - if they move sideways, get them tightened. Check Chain to make sure it is clean and oiled.
  • Q is for Quick Releases = Make sure they are closed and pointing towards the rear of the bike.
  • Check is for Check Ride = Take a quick ride to make sure bike rides properly.

  • Ride with consideration towards your fellow citizens.

Watch out for people driving to work or who drive on the road to make their living.

Watch the tires of the stopped cars – you will see movement there first.

Ride like you know what you're doing - be predictable.  Drivers will pass you quicker.

Ride like all car doors are going to open.

If you have to stop your bike on the side of the road – get 12 feet off the road.

Ride with people who don't block traffic while riding.

Ride with people who do not act aggressively towards cars.

Do not ride with people who say, "Dying while riding my bicycle wouldn't be a bad way to go."

Ride with people who look before they change lanes.

    Same Roads, Same Rules.
